Quilotoa.com

The weather in Quilotoa, like in other parts of the Ecuadorian Andes, can be highly variable—sometimes even surprising—especially when everything happens in a single day. Despite this climatic diversity, there are some common environmental features in the Quilotoa region, which are intensified by the altitude and the influence of the different microclimates generated along the equatorial line.

Thanks to its rugged mountain terrain and high-altitude location, Quilotoa is home to a variety of microclimates. Down by the Quilota lake shore, the weather is usually warmer and drier, while up near the crater rim, you’ll often face strong sun, gusty winds, and rolling mist—sometimes all in the same hour!

The sun at Quilotoa is famously intense, especially during morning and midday hours. This happens because of the high altitude and proximity to the equator line with few clouds at these elevations, the sun's rays hit with extra strength.

Like much of Ecuador, Quilotoa follows seasonal patterns. In drier months, you'll experience stronger sunlight with mostly clear skies. During rainy season, though, clouds and mist often filter the sun's intensity. That high-altitude sun is no joke! Even on cool days, sunscreen (and maybe a hat) is essential protection.

Snow at Quilotoa

At Quilotoa's high altitude, occasional snowfall can occur - particularly during the colder, wetter months. While not common, these snow dustings typically affect the highest areas of the Andes mountain range. If you're lucky enough to catch Quilotoa with a light snow covering, you'll witness a magical transformation of the landscape.
